Pick up at the hotel and departure from Cairo to the oasis of El Fayoum, the Fayoum also has an interesting archaeological heritage. Qasr Qarun is home to several Ptolemaic temples on the western shores of the lake, which were dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god, whose brothers were thriving in the lake at that time. Most of Fayoum's archaeological wealth, however, comes from the Middle Kingdom, when the oasis was a center of political power in Egypt. Today, for example, there is a group of four pyramids scattered in the desert around the Fayum. Most of them are in poor condition, mainly due to the poor quality of construction techniques and materials used for the construction of the pyramids by the pharaohs of the Middle Kingdom
The Fayoum includes the protected area of Wadi Rayan, a desert area surrounding two lakes linked by a small waterfall. In addition to the wadis and hills to explore, there is the Wadi Rayan Monastery where the monks carry on the traditions of their ancestors who dug caves in the rocks here at the dawn of Christianity. Further in the protected area is the site of Wadi El-Hetan. The world-famous fossils of Wadi Al-Hitan (Valley of the Whales) are a spectacular testimony to one of evolution's most iconic stories: the emergence of whales as marine mammals from their earlier status as animals terrestrial. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, strictly protected within the larger landscape of the attractive Wadi El-Rayan Protected Area. It is an exceptional world reference site due to the quantity, concentration, quality and accessibility of the first whale remains, often in the form of complete skeletons and a testimony of the environment in which the whales at the end of the tours, transfer back to Cairo to your hotel
